Is Jumanji: The Next Level Kid Friendly?

Jumanji: The Next Level is the sequel to the reboot of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. They probably should have left well enough alone, but there was one lady in my theater who thought every joke was very funny, so this one’s for you lady. Is Jumanji: The Next Level kid friendly? I wouldn’t recommend it for kids under 10 due to adult humor, some scary scenes, and language.

The old gang is back in this sequel – The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. They have to go back in the game to save one of their friends. We even get some bonus Danny DeVito, Awkwafina, and Danny Glover.

Jumanji: The Next Level feels like a redo of the first one, but even more crude, so it’s not as family friendly. So why is Jumanji: The Next Level PG-13? For language, suggestive behavior, and action scenes. Is it safe for kids? Parents, check out what you can expect in Jumanji: The Next Level.

Language

There is quite a bit of language. There’s only a few uses of each of the usual suspects – a**, s**t, damn, bi**h, etc. However, there was at least 7 uses of g-d damn, 10 uses of OMG, and over 20 uses of hell.

Violence

There are a few scary and tense scenes as the gang has to defeat Jurgen the Brutal. Different characters get eaten by different animals, there are some rabid and dangerous monkeys trying to kill everyone, and Jurgen’s men like to behead people. Teens and tweens would be fine, but I would keep little ones away from it.

Mature Content

As I mentioned before, there is some crude content. There are a few kisses and a conversation about being a eunuch, missing testicles and balls, so enjoy having that conversation with your children.

Is Jumanji: The Next Level Appropriate For Children Under 12?

Look, if your children saw Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, then they’ll probably enjoy this one, though the first one was better. Jumanji: The Next Level is rated PG-13 for a reason, and ideally I would say it’s for ages 13 and over, but a little younger would also be fine, depending what they are sensitive to. Jumanji: The Next Level is not ok for little kids.

You’ll see a lot of the same as in the first, with a lot of the funny lines and gags coming from switched bodies. Side note: Awkwafina does a much better old Jewish man impression than The Rock does. I did laugh at some funny Jumanji: The Next Level quotes from the voice of a southern Danny Glover like, “Did I die and turn into some kind of a small muscular boy scout?”

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle felt like a fresh take on Jumanji, whereas Jumanji: The Next Level didn’t really bring anything new to the table besides new characters that don’t fit into the story. I was left asking ‘why’ a lot. Why did they go back into the game? Why is this character important? Why is Ruby Roundhouse still just the pretty, crop-top wearing, stunt woman?

For the average movie-goer, will any of these things bother them? Probably not. The elements are similar to the first. If you want a non-thinking 2-hour fun action-adventure movie, then Jumanji: The Next Level may be what you’re looking for – just don’t expect much more. Now if you turned it into a Kevin Hart and The Rock Bromance Documentary, I’d sign up for that.
